Inspired By: The Great Gatsby

The current movie release of Baz Luhrmann's take on 'The Great Gatsby' is a feast for the eyes with such unbelievable sets and costumes you almost need to see it twice; once to follow the story line and again just to absorb all the visual goodness!

Catherine Martin (wife of Luhrmann) is responsible for the costuming and set design in the film;  her most recent release of interior textiles and wallpapers for Mokum reflects this Art Nouveau, flapper vibe beautifully, as do the range of coordinating rugs that simply exude luxury.

Here are some great finds to help you spice up your home in true Gatsby style, including an amazing room divider screen commissioned by Auckland company Firefly Light & Design, covered in Catherine's 'Antique Lace'.

Wallpaper Wednesday: Catherine Martin for Mokum

This is the latest collection of wallpapers from Mokum, designed by award winning costume designer Catherine Martin, who among many other things was head of art and costume direction on movies such as Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Australia (and wife of Baz Luhrmann!).

This gorgeous selection of wallpapers (there are fabrics too!) are inspired by flora and fauna, and come together to create a range of stunning soft, almost Art Deco feel patterns and colours for a truly feminine vibe.

The collection also features a classic black and white stripe which is something we really struggle to find a good example of - even though we are asked for it all the time - so definitely worth checking out the sampling in store now!

Art Deco Chair - Before and After

Here at esdesign we heartily encourage up-cycling; there are so many beautiful pieces of furniture out there, made with a craftsmanship rarely seen in this fast and modern world. Often these great pieces are not looked after over their many years & many owners, and that's where we come in! We have a warehouse full of such pieces just waiting to be lovingly restored back to life and put to the use they were created for, and people can bring their own project in to us to wave our magic wands over.
We recently had some clients bring this stunning (and completely run-down) Art Deco arm chair to us, it was a beautiful shape, but totally un-usable, so we restored it to its former glory, and now it's a symphony of orange style!
