The Design Process

We thought this afternoon we'd share with you some of our presentation boards for a client job that is in the works at the moment.

When we take on a design project we present our clients with a range of boards so that they can clearly see our overall idea for their home; including all of the specified elements within, the finishes/fabrics for each item and room layouts/floorplans so that it can easily be envisaged and interpreted by all.

Nodi Rugs

Sourcing rugs in NZ can at times be a real battle! The internet presents us with amazing product every day but shipping them in can become completely cost prohibitive once we factor in freight and customs fees. Fabulous rug designs right at our fingertips, but yet so far away!

Thankfully there are some great suppliers who are slowly filtering some of this 'hard to get' product onto our shores. Included is the latest range of rugs from Nodi, called Organic Lines.
The range brings together design influences from Italy and marries them with the traditional art form of knotting and weaving from India. The resulting collection is abstract, subtle in colour and oh so usable in a range of interior situations. Contact us today if you'd like any more information!

Inspiration: Soho House, Chicago

We find inspiration for our interiors work absolutely everywhere - the world of Pinterest has made life so much easier for both us and our clients to share images of the moods, colours and styles that we love!

A great example is Soho House - a hotel in Chicago, Illinois which has inspired Katie's design for a client's bedroom... streamlined and classic with masculine touches and subtle hints of glam and glitz!

My Dream Room - Kids' Edition

As some of you have already heard, we were recently asked to be a part of the awesome new TV series 'My Dream Room - Kids' Edition'!

For this show, Kiwi kids were asked to submit their ideas, plans and dreams for their ultimate bedroom. Eight children were selected, paired with a top interior designer from their region and resident celebrity builder Cocksy, and the design work and transformations began!

The esdesign team had such a great time turning the dreams of one uber enthusiastic eight year old boy into a reality - all while ensuring it was budget friendly and with DIY options galore.

The 'My Dream Room' series airs tomorrow at 7.30pm on Choice TV, and our episode is in week three, so tune in to see Eleanor making her TV debut!

esdesign Textile Design Award 2015 - Elise Brimer

This years' esdesign textile design award recipient is the super talented Elise Brimer at Massey University. We think it is so important to nurture and support the budding talent in New Zealand's design industry across all formats, so this esdesign prize is just one way that we feel we can congratulate awesome work like Elise's!

Here's a little about her collection, 'Common Thread' ;

In this collection, I wanted to encapsulate the energetic unity between the people of various cultures who call New Zealand home. New Zealand’s demographic is compiled of people from all areas of the world. Whether we are a citizen by birth or have migrated here - as equals we share the commonality of having a New Zealand identity. To communicate this I explored textile processes that are habitual to the five most numerous ethnicities that make up New Zealand’s ethnic demographic - Maori, Chinese, Samoan, Indian and New Zealand European. I experimented with Maori flax weaving, Chinese embroidery, Samoan tapa cloth processes, Indian block printing and French tapestry weaving and identified motifs which became key visual resources. These motifs were abstracted to avoid developing imagery that could offend people to whom these motifs have great cultural significance to. I have titled my collection Common Thread to infer the commonalities we share as New Zealanders whilst referencing my exploration and incorporation of motifs from textile processes primarily involving cloth and thread.

Dress to Room Pairings by Holly Phillips of The English Room

North Carolina based interior designer and fellow colour lover Holly Phillips put together a fabulous post recently; matching interiors with some of the celebrity looks that appeared on the 2015 Met Gala red carpet last week!
The theme for this years' gala was 'China: Through the Looking Glass', and Holly has done a great job in pairing fashion and rooms that look like they could have easily inspired each other! Proof that inspiration for a room really can strike anywhere, across all facets of the design world, yes even Justin Beiber!

For more great design, check out Holly's blog The English Room or follow her on Instagram!

1950's Group Architect House, Auckland

We followed a link on Facebook today to this fabulous mid-century home in Meadowbank, Auckland. It's going to auction on May 27th so get your cheque books out people!

Designed in the early 1950's by Group Architect Bill Wilson, this home has been tastefully updated over time in a sympathetic way, still embracing many of its iconic, original feautures and is presented with a lovely overall mid-century feel.

It would be worth just popping along to the open homes to have a closer look!

SHOWcase Wellington, 2015

Just over a month ago, esdesign were invited to participate in an exciting new positioning event on the 2nd of May. The event was called SHOWcase, and was used to introduce a new brand concept to the movers and shakers of Wellington, and create a palpable buzz in the city about the design and creative sector.

A group of Wellington creatives got together and developed a template, a potential incentive to get Wellingtonians excited again about the local and New Zealand design scene. They wanted to include creative input from a range of designers; fashion, furniture, interiors, illustrators, hair stylists, producers, photographers, models, landscapers and more. Their vision came together to create Wellington’s premier design show  —

SHOW believes: Design is something you feel and fashion is the way we live.
SHOW presents: a series of conceptual exhibits with a focus on designer collaboration and creative community.
SHOW celebrates: the professionals who are bringing the standard for art, design and fashion in the capital.
SHOW combines: all the elements that make up a Wellington lifestyle to create an immersive and unique event.
SHOW offers: a window into how this world is created revealing the layers of thought behind the product.
SHOW is all about: what moves designers to create, make and influence.

To help bring our portion of the show to life, we were teamed up with renowned fashion designer Trelise Cooper, and set about creating a sumptuous, luxe, layered, rich stage for her eight chosen models to be presented in. We filled a two-toned palette of teal and copper with further copper accents, lush velvets, striking light fittings and layers of wallpaper. Go bold or go home we say!

We must send a huge thank you to the wonderful suppliers who generously offered us the use of their product to help bring our space to life. These included; Wire pendant lights and Lumen bulb pendants from Mr. Ralph, paint and anaglypta wallpaper by Resene, copper accessories and side table from Maytime, and a host of wallpapers and fabrics from Unique Fabrics, Textilia, Seneca, Diva International, Charles Parsons, Warwick Fabrics and Westbury Textiles, and all products used are available for purchase through esdesign.

The response we received from the 150 guests that came through our space on the night was tremendous - there's nothing like a tight deadline to keep the adrenaline pumping for a few weeks but it was so worth the challenge when we stood back to see just what we'd managed to achieve.
Don't get us wrong, we love all our dear 'everyday' clients! But this opportunity gave us the chance to really strut our stuff in the Wellington design scene, pushing the limits a little and having a whole lot of fun along the way!

In the years to come, SHOW aims to continue revitalizing and reinvigorating Wellington's design scene with a series of conceptual events that steer away from fashion’s traditional catwalk presentation and move towards design collaboration and lifestyles. Fashion design, interior design, landscaping, architecture, visual art, hair style, make up, furniture, lighting, paint, colour, fabric, space and setting will all come together once again to inspire and delight.

We are looking forward to being  a part of SHOW in the future, and in the meantime, enjoy some of the piccies that were taken of our space on the night!
